Design Notes: Historic Route 66 has also been referred to as Will Rogers Highway, The Main Street of America, or “The Mother Road” as John Steinbeck denoted in his novel The Grapes of Wrath. Although it officially no longer exists due to the Interstate Highway Act of 1956, some sections remain to be explored and appreciated. Bobby Troup wrote the well-known tune, “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66,” after a ten-day trek with his wife from Pennsylvania to California. The song was first recorded in 1946 by Nat King Cole.
